Dec. 20, 2023.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure><p>As Pittsfield athletic director Jay Darrah looked around the\u00a0gymnasium on a somber Monday night, he felt a sense of comfort.\u00a0<\/p>\n        <p>Friends and family had gathered together to remember Gabe Anthony, a\u00a02017 Pittsfield High graduate\u00a0who died in December. The school wanted to permanently enshrine his legacy.<\/p>\n        <p>At half-court, Anthony\u2019s former basketball teammates\u00a0unveiled a framed No. 21 Pittsfield basketball jersey, a gift to his grieving family. They also unveiled a second framed No. 21 jersey that hovered above the Panthers\u2019 bench \u2014 a reminder that even though he\u2019s no longer physically there, his memory will live on.<\/p>\n        <p>\u201cWhen I was walking around the gym with his father trying to figure out the best place to position the uniform, we thought what better place than over our bench,\u201d Darrah said, \u201cso that his presence is always with us.\u201d<\/p>\n        <p>Anthony died on Dec. 15 after police say he was struck\u00a0on the side of Interstate 93 in Sanbornton by Kristina Perry, who was charged with driving while intoxicated. Anthony had gotten out of his Volkswagen Jetta in the breakdown lane when the crash occurred. He was 24 years old.<\/p>\n        <p>Nearly two months later, Monday presented the chance for the community to recognize his dedication to Pittsfield.<\/p>\n        <p>\u201cI think too often, we take things for granted, and we don\u2019t realize how important these things are, how important these good memories are that you spend with your teammates, especially in a\u00a0small community,\u201d Darrah said. \u201cWhen we lose someone that means so much to not only his family but to his teammates, to his school and the community, it\u2019s important that we memorialize him. He was one of the kids that did everything right.\u201d<\/p>\n        <p>Darrah\u2019s son, Cam, who now works as the boys\u2019 basketball assistant coach, and Casey Clark were among Anthony\u2019s former teammates in the gym.\u00a0<\/p>\n        <p>Both graduated Pittsfield in 2018, a year after Anthony, and they both played basketball with him during the Pittsfield alumni game held in the gym in November just weeks before his death.<\/p>\n        <p>\u201cHe showed up, and he was like, \u2018I\u2019m not playing. I\u2019m not playing,\u2019 \u201d Clark remembered. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Dude, get down here.\u2019 He ended up splashing, what, three 3s? That was pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n        <p>The group is inherently close. They played sports growing up together for as long as they could remember. By the time they reached Anthony\u2019s senior year, the basketball team finally put all the pieces together, Cam Darrah said, but they were upset in the first round of the playoffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n        <p>It was the following season, after Anthony had graduated, when the Panthers took home the NHIAA Division IV state championship.<\/p>\n        <p>\u201cHe was always part of that championship run,\u201d Cam Darrah said. \u201cHe was one of those guys that didn\u2019t always do the stuff that showed up on the stat sheet but was one of those guys you can\u2019t play without. \u2026 Once we won (the championship), he was just as much a part of that as anyone that was actually on the roster.\u201d<\/p>\n        <p>As the former teammates gathered together on the floor along with Anthony\u2019s father Rick, mother Erica and sister Sage, they all exchanged hugs and stood together in a state of reflection, gazing\u00a0into the distance.<\/p>\n        <p>Instead of a prolonged moment of silence, though, they opted to give Anthony a standing ovation. The applause sustained for nearly a minute.<\/p>\n        <p>Everyone on the floor \u2014 and those in the stands \u2014 knew how much Anthony meant, not only to the athletic community but the Pittsfield community at large.\u00a0<\/p>\n        <p>\u201cSmall-town communities come together in times of adversity,\u201d the elder Darrah said. \u201cToday\u2019s no different.\u201d<\/p>\n        <p>Yet,\u00a0as members of the 2017 team stood side by side, they could only notice that one of their closest friends wasn\u2019t standing beside them.<\/p>\n        <p>\u201cHe\u2019s always going to be a part of the brotherhood he helped create with all of us,\u201d Cam\u00a0Darrah said. \u201cHe will be missed.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Pittsfield athletic director Jay Darrah looked around the\u00a0gymnasium on a somber Monday night, he felt a sense of comfort.\u00a0Friends and family had gathered together to remember Gabe Anthony, a\u00a02017 Pittsfield High graduate\u00a0who died in December.
