I came. I saw. I Concord.<\/p>\n

A New Hampshire lawmaker wants to amend state law to include an official pronunciation of the capital city, one of many communities called Concord across the country. While North Carolinians pronounce the second syllable so it rhymes with \u201cbored,\u201d New Hampshire, Massachusetts and California are among those who favor something closer to \u2014 in the words of Julius Caesar \u2014 \u201cconquered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Eric Gallager, a Democrat from Concord, also wants to include an official pronunciation of \u201cNew Hampshire\u201d in state law to make it clear that \u201cshire\u201d rhymes with \u201cfur\u201d not \u201cfire.\u201d He proposes including the official pronunciations written out according to the international phonetic alphabet in a section of law that lists state symbols such as the official state sport (skiing), song (10 different tunes including \u201cOld New Hampshire\u201d), and spider ( daring jumping spider ).<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the symbols by which you are recognized, and branding is actually something that organizations take really seriously and spend a lot of money on,\u201d Gallager told a House committee Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Rep. Dianne Schuett, a Democrat from Pembroke, asked Gallager if he discussed his bill with \u201cold Yankee folks\u201d who pronounce the capital as \u201cCon-kid, New Hamp-shah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell you, I\u2019m fearful that some of them may be offended if we mandated a specific pronunciation that doesn\u2019t jibe with their heritage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Gallager said his bill would not be a mandate, just as the other state symbols are not universally embraced.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though the state fruit is the pumpkin, you can still grow other fruits besides pumpkins, which I\u2019m sure our apple growers appreciate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And while he acknowledged the legislation may appear trivial, Gallager said he tries to \u201cgo for things that other people aren\u2019t also legislating about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a lot of the other more important issues, the trenches are already dug and people have already made up their minds,\u201d he said. \u201cBut with something more minor like this one, I think we can have a chance to bring people together and actually pass some legislation.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
