Today, the VA reports that in 2020, NH\u2019s veteran suicide rate was 36 per 100,000, \u201csignificantly higher\u201d than the national veteran suicide rate of 31.7. Our veterans need support, why would we as a state ever pass a law saying suicide is the answer for some people? This is why the NH State Veterans Affairs Committee opposes HB 1283. Proponents say the bill has \u201csafeguards\u201d and only applies to those diagnosed with a terminal illness. But it\u2019s obvious that the mere existence of any assisted suicide law is completely at odds with anti-suicide efforts. Assisted suicide laws inevitably expand and put even more people at risk. Just look at what\u2019s happening next door in Canada.<\/p>\n
In July 2023, Canada launched an investigation into Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) when multiple veterans reported they were offered Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) as an alternative to medical care. Retired corporal Christine Gauthier, who is paraplegic, told the House of Commons Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs that assisted dying was raised during a years-long fight for a home wheelchair lift. Gauthier testified that a VAC representative said, \u201cMadam, if you are really so desperate, we can give you medical assistance in dying now.\u201d Veterans Affairs Minister Lawrence MacAulay confirmed there were multiple cases where MAiD was offered to a veteran. Let\u2019s help our veterans live, not die. Let\u2019s not open the door to putting vulnerable populations at risk.<\/p>\n
