NH Audubon\u2019s \u201cTwitchers\u201d will be taking part in this year\u2019s Superbowl of Birding on January 27, 2024.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>

NH Audubon\u2019s \u201cTwitchers\u201d will be taking part in this year\u2019s Superbowl of Birding on Jan. 27. The Superbowl is a competition that takes place in January \u2013 but this Superbowl has nothing to do with football. It involves looking for as many bird species as possible in 12 hours and is run by Massachusetts Audubon\u2019s Joppa Flats Education Center. Teams can compete in Essex County, Mass., and\/or Rockingham County, N.H. in various categories.<\/p>\n

After a break in 2023 when team captain Becky Suomala was away, the Twitchers will be back in New Hampshire competing for the Townie Award (the most species in one town).<\/p>\n

As \u201cThe Twitchers out of the Rye,\u201d they are not planning on competing in Rye where the \u201cTwitchers\u201d first started in 2009, but their strategy is still under development. \u201cWe\u2019re considering Seabrook, but we want to see what rarities are still around before we decide,\u201d said captain Becky Suomala.<\/p>\n

Rare species are worth more points than common ones. \u201cThey can really boost your score,\u201d said Suomala. Teams are required to call in and report \u201cfive-pointers\u201d so that sightings can be shared with other teams. The first team to call in a five-point species gets bonus points.<\/p>\n

The Twitchers also raise money to support NH Audubon and the New Hampshire Bird Records and NHeBird programs. \u201cWe are especially grateful for pledges when we\u2019re out at 5 a.m. in the dark and cold listening for owls!\u201d said Suomala.
