In a world going mad, you can bet on certain members of the New Hampshire legislature to be leading the parade. Case in point: CACR 20, a proposed constitutional amendment “relating to declaring independence from the United States of America. Providing that if the national debt reaches $40 trillion, New Hampshire shall declare independence and proceed as a sovereign nation.” It is sponsored by one Jason Gerhard of Northfield, and you owe it to yourself to look up his background.
Ever the optimist, I see adoption of the proposed amendment having positive consequences. Hell, I’ll even vote for it if the following provisions are added: 1) That residents who wish to remain U.S. citizens be granted a reasonable grace period in which to settle affairs and emigrate. 2) That all persons everywhere in the U.S. associated with the ridiculously misnamed Free State Project be required to resettle in the newly independent Republic of New Hampshire; and finally 3) That sovereign New Hampshire do the responsible, libertarian thing and pay its share of the national debt back to the U.S. Treasury in gold and/or silver. What do you think? Are Rep. Gerhard and his allies on to something?
